As I moved to using all natural cleaning products in my home, I knew I had to replace my usual pine floor cleaner with something less toxic. So, I started using this formula – which leaves your floors sparkling clean and your house smelling like a pine forest.

It’s simple to make, inexpensive, and only requires three ingredients. But you will need a bucket and mop! I also ditched my old Swiffer Wet-jet to start cleaning my floors the old fashioned way. It’s better for your health and the environment.

This formulation is safe to use on wood floors, tile, linoleum, and all other floor types. However, if you’re unsure how it might affect your specific floors, you can always do a small spot test in an out-of-the-way area first.

Ingredients

You only need three simple ingredients!

Here’s everything you need to make your own pine floor cleaner:

  • 2 Tablespoons (30 ml) Liquid Castile Soap – I like Quinn’s Organic Liquid Castile Soap, but any brand will work. I recommend using unscented soap for this recipe.
  • 15 Drops Pine Essential Oil – Pine essential oil not only smells great, it also has antibacterial and antimicrobial properties.
  • 10 Drops Cypress Essential Oil – Cypress essential oil is antibacterial, making it a great addition to your cleaning solutions.
NOTE: I primarily use the NOW brand essential oils for cleaning. They’re relatively inexpensive, but effective for cleaning floors, surfaces, toilets, etc. For therapeutic purposes, I prefer Plant Therapy oils.

Instructions

This recipe is incredibly easy to make. Get out your mop bucket, put it in the sink, and start filling it up with hot water before adding the soap and oils.

  1. Fill a clean, empty mop bucket with about 1 gallon water – give or take. (I never measure this out. I just fill it up until I think there’s enough to mop with).
  2. While the bucket is filling with water, add 2 tablespoons (30 ml) liquid castile soap. (I also never measure this out. I just add two big squeezes of soap into the bucket. It doesn’t have to be precise.)
  3. Add 15 drops pine essential oil and 10 drops cypress essential oil to the water/soap mixture.
  4. Mop your floors as usual, working in sections and dipping/wringing the mop as needed. Rinsing is not required. Allow floors to air dry.

Pine Floor Cleaner

Cleans and freshens all floor types naturally.

Ingredients

  • 1 gallon hot water
  • 2 tbsp (30ml) liquid castile soap
  • 15 drops pine essential oil
  • 10 drops cypress essential oil

Instructions

  • Fill a clean, empty mop bucket with about 1 gallon water – give or take. (I never measure this out. I just fill it up until I think there's enough to mop with).
  • While the bucket is filling with water, add 2 tablespoons (30 ml) liquid castile soap. (I also never measure this out. I just add two big squeezes of soap into the bucket. It doesn't have to be precise.)
  • Add 15 drops pine essential oil and 10 drops cypress essential oil to the water/soap mixture.
  • Mop your floors as usual, working in sections and dipping/wringing the mop as needed. Rinsing is not required. Allow floors to air dry.
NOTE: If you find the solution smells too strong (or not strong enough), you can adjust the amount of essential oil to your preference. The amount in the recipe is what I’ve found works best for me. But you can experiment with the following:

  • To Decrease Scent: Use 10 drops pine essential oil and 5 drops cypress essential oil
  • To Increase Scent: Use 20 drops pine essential oil and 15 drops cypress essential oil

Safety Precautions

The ingredients used to make this pine floor cleaner are natural and organic in origin, but that doesn’t mean they’re without consequences if used improperly. Do not ingest this formula or leave it where children or pets could ingest it.

I recommend using gloves when cleaning with essential oils. This may not be necessary for everyone, but individuals with sensitive skin may experience irritation they come in contact with essential oils. It’s always better to be safe than sorry!

If you’re unsure how an essential oil might affect your skin, you can always do a spot test. Just combine a drop or two of essential oil with a small amount of carrier oil (olive, sweet almond, etc.). Apply to your skin and wait a few hours to see if there’s any reaction.
